At last BT is putting its fibre optic network to good use – 2.5 million homes and businesses in urban areas will be able to get a 100Mbit (ie office network speed) internet connection by 2012. A further 7.5m should have up to 40Mbit lines. Press release.
These are download speeds – uploads will apparently be limited to 10Mbits, still fast enough for a mid-sized business.
We don’t know the end-user pricing yet, but the wholesale pricing gives
- initial connection charge £130 ex vat
- annual rental £294
BT have said that they’ll roll it out first to areas with the highest density of demand.
